Vanessa came to Singapore in 2009 with her husband and 3 children; they welcomed a fourth child into the family in 2012. Vanessa has over 12 years of experience working as a speech-language therapist, early childhood teacher, and trainer. Over the course of her career, she has worked in mainstream, international, and special schools, and also in outpatient therapy clinics.

Vanessa graduated from the University of Texas at Austin (USA) in 2000 with a Master's Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders, Multicultural/Bilingual specialization. After working as an early childhood teacher in Spain and doing post-graduate work in Sweden, she returned to the USA in 2003 to begin work as a Speech-Language Pathologist. Vanessa attained the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association in 2004.

Vanessa worked in the US public school system for nearly 5 years, providing therapy and assessments for Spanish-speaking children. She gained experience in developing group interventions to target areas of need for all children involved. She served as the coordinator of bilingual SLP services in the school district, and helped develop an intensive language intervention program for preschool-aged children. Vanessa also provided training to teachers and other SLPs.

In Singapore before joining BubbleBee, she first worked in private practice, providing one-to-one intervention for preschool- and school-aged clients from mainstream, international, and special schools. After that, she joined Rainbow Centre, Margaret Drive, where she gained intensive clinical experience with feeding and oral-motor therapy, use of AAC, classroom-based interventions, and co-treatment and assessment with other therapists. Vanessa also enjoyed opportunities to provide trainings for teachers and supervise graduate students from the NUS Master of Science in SLP during their clinical rotations.

Vanessa loves to collaborate with other professionals and learn from them, and has observed that such exchange of ideas and perspectives can provide better service to clients. She strongly believes that all children should have the opportunity to participate in appropriate educational programs as well as in the community to the fullest extent. She has been a member of SHAS since 2010, and currently serves as coordinator of the Multicultural/Bilingual Focus Group.

Vanessa eagerly participates in continuing education, not only for her own enjoyment and interest but also because she believes she is better able to provide effective therapy when her own training is continually updated, enriched, and expanded.

In the space where I do my work, I'm usually seated in a child-sized chair at a low table, in a room filled with toys. In planning sessions, I often need to play with the toys, try them out, while anticipating what the child would say, and carefully planning how the activity can facilitate practice of communication skills. It's a fun place to work.

The space where I do my work is filled with skills that the child is in the process of learning and can do with some guidance. I do detective work to find this space-- the zone of proximal development (Vygotsky)-- the difference between what a child already knows and what s/he is just not yet able to do. It is satisfying to observe skills improve and to celebrate this with the child and his/her family. It's an exciting place to work.

The space where I do my work is also that moment in our lives that our paths intersect. Meeting with children for each therapy session, I always feel blessed at how they touch my life and inspire me to be a better therapist, to be more open-minded, to learn more, to be creative. I hope that I am also somehow touching their lives in a positive way. It's an inspiring place to work.
